Texas Rangers youngsters need to show gradual improvement

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In 1983, the Briarcliff Barons (my alma mater) played for the Georgia High School state championship in baseball. My buddies and I hung out at Cosmos video arcade, played Galaga and USA vs. USSR bubble hockey.

A much thinner and well-coiffed future sportswriter took the lovely Adele Medina to prom where we danced the night away to Steve Perry and Journey. You haven't really lived until you've slow danced to "Lights."

And 14 players currently in the Rangers' spring training camp, were not even born yet.

This means two things:

1. I'm getting older and paunchier.

2. The Rangers are getting younger.

If there is a focus at spring training this year, it should be on that group of 14 (for the record, it's Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Brandon McCarthy, Luis Mendoza, Chris Davis, Taylor Teagarden, John Mayberry Jr., German Duran, Eric Hurley, Julio Borbon, Brandon Boggs, Joaquin Arias, Max Ramirez, Matt Harrison and Elvis Andrus) and what they show management over the next six weeks.

Add Spain to China's list of diplomatically conquered roster of allies, writes Frederick W. Stakelbeck Jr. Capote a marvelous achievement: Lady Liberty hasn't love a movie as much as she did Capote for a long time. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the very dull The New World Fathers, sons, and senators: This year, says Vincent Fiore, family will mean a lot when it comes to deciding a few Senate races "Heads" bin Laden wins, (turning) tails, Bush loses: Nancy Salvato has to hand it to Osama bin Laden. His offer of a truce came at a perfect time for the enemies of the American-led war against terrorism Right and left and Roe v Wade: The right-to-life crowd may cheer the day that Roe v Wade is struck down, writes Lisa Fabrizio, but lovers of the American Constitution will probably be the happiest Storm arises over emergency school vouchers: In the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, public money was made available to move students from destroyed public schools into private schools? A good thing? Not according to some, says Paul M.

New checkpoint opens on Interstate 8

To answer your question as to why the legality has been challenged it goes like this: Dumb criminal gets caught at a checkpoint doing something bad or is a fugitive and is going to spend the better part of their life in prison. Their only recourse is to question the legality of why they were stopped. It goes before the courts and the courts hold that checkpoints are legal. This scenario isn't just with Border Patrol many other dumb criminals have tried this tactic with CHP, LAPD, LASO, and just about every other law enforcement agency. Where I'm at now isn't the only law enforcement agency I've worked for, but it's always the same desperate criminal that doesn't want to rot in prison will grasp at straws to stay out. " .

Clinton launches Texas tour in El Paso

The Clinton rally begins at 6 p.m. today She is scheduled to speak at about 6:30 p.m. However, to accommodate the expected large crowd, the doors at the Don Haskins Center will open at 4:30 p.m., officials said.

Among those who plan to attend the rally is West Side voter Yolanda Uranga. She's going along with her husband and several friends.

"We've got to have a good turnout because she needs us right now," Uranga said.

Reyes urged people to show up early because the arena holds 12,000 people, and entrance is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"In 1996 the Clintons had a rally at the airport with 44,000 people, and what people forget is that we turned away another 12,000 people," Reyes said. "That's how much interest there is."

No more weekends off: P’s & C’s reporting

The great L.A. Times scribe Jim Murray once said, "Spring is the time of year when the ground thaws, trees bud, the income tax falls due — and everybody wins the pennant."

And so it is that your correspondent, memorably dubbed as the faux "crusading everyman" by one of our angrier blog participants, has already done his taxes, an annual end-of-January ritual before heading to spring training and being immersed in a six-week world where normal life is put on hold and baseball takes precedence over all else.

We'll be headed down Wednesday, a day before pitchers and catchers are officially required to report. Need some time to stock the fridge of the rental house and get a lay of the land in our new neighborhood, plus stop by the ballpark at Dark Star to see how many eager Braves arrived early.
