Mike Smith, lead singer for Dave Clark Five, dies
Although the Beatles were the most popular of the British Invasion bands of the 1960s, the Dave Clark Five claimed a string of U.S. chart-topping hits, many of them co-written by Smith and Clark, including "Because," "Glad All Over," "Any Way You Want It" and "I Like It Like That." The band made 12 appearances on Ed Sullivan's variety show, the most for any British act. The group was founded by Clark, who played drums, in 1958. Smith was not an original member. He joined in 1961 as keyboardist, lead singer and the band's most recognizable face. Smith was born in London on Dec. 12, 1943. He began studying classical music at age 5 and was admitted to Trinity Music College in London at 13. After the demise of the band in the early 1970s, Clark and Smith continued to release singles as Dave Clark & Friends until 1973.

'Greatest Of All Time' Calling It A Day
He's an icon in this business," says Johnson. “Nowadays the word icon is thrown around like an egg-white omelet is thrown around. But he definitely is an icon." “When you're comparing someone to the best, you're comparing him to Ric Flair. Ric Flair is the best," agrees TNA champion Kurt Angle. “A lot of people say Kurt Angle is comparable to Ric Flair, but you can't compare yourself to Ric Flair. He's amazing." Flair's 2004 autobiography, “To Be The Man," afforded other stars from this generation an opportunity to give props to a performer they had idolized for years. “In my life, I bow down to only one person, and that's Jesus Christ. But in my professional life, I wanted Ric to know, he is the man," wrote Shawn Michaels, who will be Flair's opponent in what is expected to be his last match at Wrestlemania 24 in Orlando.
Giants, Jets prepare to scout combine
For general managers Jerry Reese and Mike Tannenbaum, though, the task marks the beginning of the Giants' attempt to keep the status quo and for the Jets to turn things around. It could prove a tougher road for Reese and his Super Bowl-winning staff. As they say, reaching the top is a lot easier than staying there. "It'll be a little different this year because everybody will be patting us on the back and saying, 'Good job,' '' Reese said. "But we'll try to stay focused and get us another strong draft class. "The bar's been set high. I have this great fear of winning the Super Bowl and not making the playoffs the next year. We don't want that. We don't want to disappear.'' Reese heads into Indianapolis with fond memories of his last combine his first as general manager which began the trail to an unquestionable home run of a 2007 draft.
Judge Endorses Separate N.Y. Arbitration on Adjustments to Historic ...
The adjustment the industry is seeking for 2004, the year which is the subject of the litigation, has been pegged at $1.1 billion. Though the funds in question stem from 2004 calculations, the issues raised will most likely recur every year, and the 1998 accord requires that the annual payments extend in perpetuity. Ramos is the first judge in the nation to rule that a state is entitled to its own, separate arbitration on claims that cigarette manufacturers have lost market share because of the obligations imposed by the 1998 settlement. In the second ruling, Ramos rejected the state's contention that he should decide whether it has carried out its obligation under the 1998 pact to collect payments on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations. Instead, he ruled that issue must be decided as a part of the individual New York state arbitration.
Organic rules roost as chicken flies off shelves
One contributor from Fife to an online debate about the subject wrote last week: "One supermarket in Glenrothes has had none at all since these programmes went out."Another said: "In Lanark, at the local supermarket, the free-range chickens were nearly sold out and other people at my work also commented on the same thing happening at their local stores."From now on, it's only free range in our house because standard chicken farming should not be supported by our money."Last night, a spokesman for Sainsburys said its customers in Scotland had been buying free-range or organic chickens in vast numbers. The programmes fronted by Oliver and Fearnley-Whittingstall included images of birds kept in spaces smaller than an A4 piece of paper and spending virtually 24 hours a day in near-darkness.Oliver concentrated on chickens being raised to satisfy the demand for cheap food whilst Fearnley-Whittingstall set up two poultry farms, one free range, the other intensive to try and highlight the differences in both technique and quality of life for the birds. However, many consumers are continuing to buy battery chickens and their eggs despite a recent RSPCA survey showing 75% of the British public thought supermarkets should only sell organic or free-range poultry products.A spokesman for the charity added: "Since recently discovering that standard chickens were farmed in poor conditions these people now buy chickens that have had a better life."Nearly three out of four people feel supermarkets should only sell higher welfare chicken such as Freedom Food, free-range or organic."This directly supports the RSPCA's January campaign in which we asked people to sign a petition calling on supermarkets to sell only higher-welfare chicken by 2010.
