Pitch of his life: Clemens gives it his best in Congress

We got the tough childhood, the fact his father died when Clemens was 9 years old and how he used baseball to get to college. We got how hard he's worked at his craft. We got how he went out and pitched for Team USA, all but wrapping himself in the flag. We saw flashes of his indignation, or as he asked in the beginning: how can you disprove a negative?

And in the end?

After the five hours of yesterday's dog-and-pony show?

We don't know much more than we did before.

Because someone is lying here, there's no question about that. Clemens says he never took performance drugs. Brian McNamee, his onetime trainer and friend, says he administered them to him.

Take your pick.

But ask yourself this: Why would McNamee lie when he'd been told by the government before the Mitchell Report that he would be prosecuted if he didn't tell the truth?

That's the bind Clemens has been in since the Mitchell Report was released, and it goes way beyond whether you think McNamee is someone who was accepted into Clemens' inner world and then betrayed him, the ultimate rat.

Giants-Patriots Super Bowl the second most-watched TV show ever

The New York Giants' thrilling win over New England was the most-watched Super Bowl ever with 97.5 million viewers, a total that is second only to the "M-A-S-H" finale audience, Nielsen Media Research said Monday.

The game eclipsed the previous Super Bowl record of 94.08 million, set when Dallas defeated Pittsburgh in 1996. The final "M-A-S-H" episode, which drew 106 million viewers in 1983, is the only other show in American broadcast history watched by more people.

Sunday's game had almost all the ingredients Fox could have hoped for: a tight contest with an exciting finish involving a team that was attempting to make history as the NFL's first unbeaten team since 1972.

But the Giants ended New England's bid for perfection, 17-14. Throughout the game, the teams were never separated by more than a touchdown.

Owner Fred Wilpon says 'it's a championship season' for Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE - Fred Wilpon, whose spring-training declarations usually teeter between vague and unambitious, this time offered a concrete, borderline Steinbrenneresque expectation.

After authorizing a $140 million payroll - a franchise record by roughly $20 million - the one-time author of "meaningful games in September" fully expects the Mets to be playing games in October. Make that late October.

"It's a championship season," said Wilpon, in unusually blunt terms, during an early afternoon address at the team's complex. "We expect to be in the playoffs, and deep into the playoffs. That's our expectation."

With his son, chief operating officer Jeff, by his side for the first time during a spring address, the 71-year-old Wilpon suggested he suffered daily heartache this winter as a result of the Mets' late-season collapse.

For some Hawaii residents, tourists make lousy neighbors

HONOLULU — Hawaii's verdant volcanic peaks and crystalline waters have made tourism the state's biggest industry.

But not all Hawaii residents are thrilled by the millions who flock to their shores. They complain that some visitors are renting homes and rooms in their residential neighborhoods. These tourists create noise, drive up home and rental prices and destroy the sense of community, residents say.

"When you live in a place like Hawaii that is a resort 24-7, you need areas where people can feel at home," said Katherine Bryant-Hunter, chairwoman of a neighborhood board on the island of Oahu. "Our neighbors change everyday. They don't coach volleyball. They don't go to church with us. They are not part of the community fabric."

Their concerns have led to a flurry of new proposals by lawmakers on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
