| Senator: Arizona prisons are progressing
HONOLULU (AP) _ A Hawaii senator says he's pleased with two privately run Arizona prisons that house island inmates. The prisons have been criticized for an accidental release of seven inmates in August and complaints by former employees who say the facilities are mismanaged. Senator Will Espero says the prisons run by Tennessee-based Corrections Corporation of America are moving in the right direction. He is the chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee. He inspected the prisons with two other senators and a Public Safety Department deputy director on Friday and Saturday. Plumbing and college courses still haven't started at the prisons, and officials want video conferencing to become available so inmates can keep in touch with their families at home.
For many in Mexico, life starts to look up
Crime is down, public health and education levels are improving, and Mexican democracy is more robust than at any time in history. "The country is stronger than ever," said Leon Krauze, a political author and television host. "We have managed to overcome many of the political and economic tempests that used to threaten us." As the debate over illegal immigration percolates in the United States, there are hopes on both sides of the border that Mexico's improving economy eventually will provide enough jobs to encourage significant numbers of Mexicans to stay and prosper in their country. There could be other benefits for the United States. Mexico bought $126 billion in U.S. goods between January and November last year, up 25 percent since 2004.
Eight-Year-Old Boy Enjoys Adventure of A Lifetime as Youngest Person ...
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Eight-year-old boys dream of being superheroes -- flying high above the clouds with nothing to limit themselves but their imaginations. For young adventurer Danner Cronise, Zero Gravity Corporation (ZERO-G (R)), the first and only FAA-approved provider of commercial weightless flights, turned this dream into reality and enabled Danner to fly like Superman and enjoy 10-times more hang-time than the world's best basketball player -- all while making history as the youngest person ever to experience a weightless flight. Danner's adventure truly was a family affair, as he was joined by his father Ray, and older sisters Erin (10) and Alex (12). A NASA engineer for more than 15 years and a co-founder of ZERO-G, Ray Cronise had a unique and personal reason for wanting to see his children enjoy weightlessness first hand.

He's a tremendous football player, a great athlete," Ledford said. "He's a kid that has played just about every position on the field for us. I think he's going to be a big surprise for a lot of people. We're kind of in a rural area. I think if Alfonzo were in a metro area, he would be a lot bigger name." Playing Class A ball, the lowest classification in Georgia, Dennard's team made it to the state championship game this season. Dennard played both wide receiver and cornerback. His twin brother, Lorenzo, was the quarterback. Lorenzo is going to community college in Hutchinson, Kan., to play ball. Dennard has not visited Nebraska, but said Thursday night, "I liked the coaching staff. I liked Coach (Bo) Pelini. I liked Memorial Stadium. I checked it all out on the Internet." Dennard gives NU 22 commitments.
Faulk expects NFL to keep Spygate case under wraps
Did the New England Patriots secretly tape the Rams' final practice before Super Bowl 36? That story has been making the rounds, of course. In video comments delivered exclusively to Sprint mobile phone subscribers, retired Rams running back Marshall Faulk said he doubts that anything will surface from an investigation — if, in fact, the NFL opts to investigate. Faulk strongly implies that the NFL doesn't want to know the truth, even if former Patriots video man Matt Walsh comes forward with credible information. "My question is, why does it matter? It won't be investigated, and nothing will happen," Faulk said. "The Patriots will get to keep the Lombardi Trophy, and their rings. I mean, think about it. Think about the shield we're talking about. That shield being the grand scheme of things.

NFL Wire Notes | Parcells headed for Miami
Parcells and Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga agreed Wednesday on a four-year contract to be Miami's vice president of football operations, according to ESPN, which employs the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach as an analyst. The Dolphins declined to comment, only saying no contract has been signed, and no one at Huizenga's business office was authorized to comment when reached by The Associated Press. Parcells, who previously coached the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys, is apparently set to return to the NFL. "Really?" defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday said. "You can't control it. But somebody like the Big Tuna, regardless of who's in the front office or who's not, brings a lot of respect and a lot of credibility with him. ... If you're a free agent out there, that might draw you in." The Falcons announced Parcells, 66, turned them down.
